What Are Custom Sew On Patches?
Sew on patches are fabric patches stitched directly onto a garment using a needle and thread or a sewing machine. There’s no adhesive involved, the thread itself creates the bond, which is why sewn patches hold up longer than any other attachment method.
They work across every patch style we make, embroidered, woven, chenille, and printed, and they’re compatible with fabrics where heat-based backings simply don’t work: leather, nylon, wool, performance blends, and heavily structured outerwear. For anything that’s going to be washed regularly, worn hard, or needs to look sharp for years, custom sew on patches are the right call.
Military units, fire departments, police departments, and workwear suppliers have used sew-on attachment as their standard for decades, not because it’s trendy, but because it genuinely lasts.
Patch Maker you can trust!
Order Custom Sew On Patches in 3 Steps
1
Send Us Your Design
Send us whatever you have, a logo file, a PNG, a PDF, a sketch, or just a written description of what you’re going for. Any format works. If you need personalized sew on patches but don’t have artwork yet, our design team starts from scratch at no charge.
2
Approve Your Free Digital Proof
Within 24 hours we send back a proof showing your patch exactly as it will be produced, colors, size, embroidery coverage, border style, and backing confirmation. Ask for changes as many times as you need. Nothing goes to production until you sign off on it.
3
We Produce and Ship
Once the proof is approved, we get into production. Most sew on patches ship within 10–14 business days. If your deadline is tighter, mention it when you reach out, rush options are available.
What You Can Customize
Every sew on patch we make is built to your spec. Here’s what you control on every order:
Patch Style
Sew-on backing works with all our patch types. Sew on patches for clothes come in the following styles:
- Embroidered sew on patches — Thread stitched onto a twill base. Raised texture, durable, classic look. Available at 50%, 75%, or 100% embroidery coverage. The higher the coverage, the richer and more opaque the finish.
- Woven sew on patches — Finer threads woven tightly together rather than stitched on top. Better for intricate detail, small text, and logos with a lot going on. The surface sits flatter than embroidery.
- Chenille sew on patches — Plush, looped yarn construction. That varsity-jacket texture. Popular for schools, sports teams, and brands going for a heritage aesthetic.
- Printed / sublimated sew on patches — Full-color photographic print on fabric. Handles gradients, blended tones, and complex artwork that stitching can’t replicate.
- PVC sew on patches — Flexible rubber construction, waterproof edge-to-edge. Heat-based backing doesn’t work on PVC, so sewing is actually the standard attachment for PVC patches on tactical and outdoor gear.
Size
We make sew on patches from 1″ up to 12″. The right size depends on placement, chest patches typically sit between 3″ and 4″, back patches run larger, name tapes and tab patches are narrower. If you’re not sure, share where the patch is going and we’ll recommend something proportionate.
Shape
Round, rectangular, oval, shield, custom die-cut, any shape works. If your logo has a specific outline, we cut to match it at no extra cost. Custom shapes don’t add to the price.
Border Style
- Merrowed border — A looped overlock stitch wraps the edge of the patch. Clean, traditional, and the most common finish for embroidered patches. Works best on standard geometric shapes.
- Hot cut (laser cut) — The patch is cut close to the design’s edge. Sharper finish, works well for irregular shapes and custom outlines.
- Die cut — The patch shape follows the exact contour of the design. No standard geometric edge, the patch silhouette is part of the design.
Thread & Colors
We match to Pantone/PMS standards. If your brand has color codes, send them and we’ll get as close as the thread range allows. Special threads, metallic, glow-in-the-dark, reflective, are available for applications where standard colors won’t cut it.
Sewing Notes for Buyers
Sew-on patches ship with a plain fabric or plastic backing rather than an adhesive layer. A thin plastic backing adds rigidity and makes the sewing process cleaner, particularly for high-coverage embroidered patches, it prevents the needle from snagging threads during application.
If you’re applying patches in volume (uniforms, workwear programs), an industrial sewing machine creates the most consistent edge stitch. For smaller runs, a home machine or hand stitching around the border does the job.

Who Orders Sew On Patches
The short version: anyone who needs their patch to last. Sew-on attachment is the professional standard wherever patches face regular washing, physical stress, or long service life. Here’s where the bulk of orders actually come from:
Military and Law Enforcement
Military branches, police departments, fire departments, and EMS units almost exclusively use sew-on attachment for dress uniforms and duty gear. It’s not a preference, many departments require it by policy.
Patches stitched directly to turnout gear, tactical vests, and formal uniforms hold through conditions that would compromise adhesive backing within a few washes. Custom sew on patches for these applications are typically ordered in bulk with consistent specs across the unit.
Workwear and Corporate Uniforms
Staff uniforms in construction, manufacturing, logistics, hospitality, and healthcare get washed frequently, sometimes commercially. Sew on patches for clothes like work jackets and polo shirts handle that without lifting edges or color bleed. Companies ordering staff patches for a full team usually specify sew-on backing as default because it simply holds longer than alternatives.
Sports Teams and Schools
Jerseys, warm-up jackets, gym bags, and varsity coats all benefit from sewn-on patches. The stitching holds through season-long use and repeated machine washing. Schools ordering spirit patches or award emblems for letterman jackets commonly prefer sew-on for longevity, especially for garments students wear for years after graduation.
Motorcycle Clubs and Riding Organizations
MC cuts are almost always built with sew-on patches. Back patches, top rockers, bottom rockers, and side patches on denim or leather vests are traditionally stitched on, the backing is part of the culture as much as the design. PVC patches on tactical gear also default to sew-on since PVC can’t take heat-activated adhesive.
Fashion Brands and Streetwear Labels
Independent brands and clothing labels use sew-on attachment for patches on jackets, coaches’ coats, and heavyweight pieces where the stitched edge adds to the garment’s craft aesthetic. Personalized sew on patches with a visible border stitch read as intentional detail, it contributes to the garment’s quality perception rather than sitting as an afterthought.
Scouting and Youth Organizations
Scout patches are a classic sew-on application. Achievement badges, rank emblems, and troop identifiers get sewn to merit badge sashes, uniforms, and vests that go through years of active use. Sew on name patches for individual scouts or troop identifiers are a frequent order, small format, clear lettering, durable enough for everything that comes with outdoor programs.
DIY Crafters and Repair Projects
Plenty of orders are individual, someone repairing a jacket, personalizing a bag, or adding an emblem to a piece of gear that doesn’t take heat well. Sew-on is the safe choice for leather, wool, performance fabrics, and anything where an iron-on would either fail to bond or damage the material.
Why Patch Makers USA
Here’s what actually differentiates us from the field:
Veteran-Owned and Operated
PatchMakers USA was founded by veterans. We understand what it means for a patch to represent something, a unit, a rank, an organization. That perspective carries into every order, regardless of whether it’s for military use or a school club.
Free Design, Always
You don’t need a print-ready file or a designer on your team. Send us a description, a sketch, a reference image, or your existing logo. We build the artwork and send a digital proof. Revisions are free until it looks right. That applies to personalized sew on patches with custom text, names, or unique shapes just as much as it does to standard logo patches.
No Minimum Order
Whether you need a single patch or a full program run in the thousands, we handle both. There’s no minimum quantity on custom sew on patches, which means you can test a design before committing to a bulk order, or order exactly the number you need without paying for overage.
Azo-Free Materials
All patches are produced with Azo-free dyes. That matters for schools, childrenswear, healthcare settings, and anyone ordering under safety compliance guidelines. You get the same quality either way, the material choice just removes a concern from the list.
Rush Orders
If your timeline is tight, say so when you reach out. We have 5-day and 7-day rush options for qualifying orders. We’ll confirm what’s achievable for your specs before you commit.
Quality That Ships Correctly
Every order is inspected before it leaves our facility. If something doesn’t match the approved proof, we fix it or replace it. No debate.
Frequently Asked Questions
There’s no minimum. You can order one patch or ten thousand. Pricing per patch decreases as quantity goes up, but we don’t require a minimum to get started. That holds for custom orders with names, logos, or specific shapes.
Most orders ship within 10–14 business days from proof approval. If you need them sooner, ask about rush production when you first reach out, 5-day and 7-day options are available for qualifying orders.
Cost depends on patch style, size, and quantity. Embroidered patches start lower; woven and chenille styles vary based on complexity. Get in touch or use the quote form, we respond quickly with a price and a proof, so you’re not waiting days for basic information.
Iron-on patches use a heat-activated adhesive to bond to fabric. Sew on patches have no adhesive, they’re attached by stitching, which creates a stronger, more permanent bond. Sew-on holds through more washes, works on a wider range of fabrics (including leather, nylon, and wool where heat would cause damage), and is the professional standard for uniforms and workwear. Iron-on is faster to apply; sew-on lasts longer under heavy use.
Sew on patches work on essentially any fabric, cotton, denim, canvas, leather, nylon, wool, performance blends, and waterproof outerwear. That’s one of the main advantages over iron-on: you’re not limited by heat tolerance. The only real consideration is the thickness of the material and your access to a needle or sewing machine.
Yes. Personalized sew on patches with individual names, numbers, or custom text are one of our more common order types. Sew on name patches for staff uniforms, sports teams, scout troops, and emergency services are all handled the same way, send us the list of names, we build the proofs, and you approve before anything is produced.
We produce and ship the patch. Application is done on your end, either by your team, a local tailor, or a uniform supplier. The patch ships with a plain twill or plastic backing ready for sewing. If you’re applying a high volume and need guidance on the best stitch type, we’re happy to advise.
Any format works, PNG, JPG, PDF, AI, EPS, or a photo of a hand-drawn sketch. Vector files are ideal for the cleanest production, but our design team handles conversion. You don’t need to send us a print-ready file.
Yes. If you want the option to iron-on first and then sew around the edges for extra security, we can provide patches with both backings. That combination is common for uniforms that need a quick initial placement followed by a permanent stitch finish.
