What Are Custom Iron On Patches?

Iron on patches are embroidered, woven, or printed fabric pieces with a heat-activated adhesive backing. You position the patch where you want it, press a hot iron or heat press over it for 30–60 seconds, and the glue bonds directly to the fabric, no sewing required.

They’re one of the most practical ways to brand uniforms, personalize jackets, repair worn clothing, or add flair to bags and hats. The heat-seal backing holds firmly through regular washing, and they can be reinforced with a few stitches if you need extra staying power.

Custom iron on patches work across embroidered, woven, and full-color printed styles, so whatever your design calls for, the backing option fits.

What You Can Customize

Iron on patches don’t come in one standard form. Here’s what you get to control on every order:

Patch Type

The iron-on backing works across all our main patch styles:

  • Iron on embroidered patches — The classic choice. Thread is stitched directly onto a fabric base, creating a raised, textured finish that holds up well through wear and washing. Available at 50%, 75%, or 100% embroidery coverage.
  • Woven iron on patches — Thinner threads woven tightly together allow for finer detail and smaller text than embroidery. Good for logos with a lot going on.
  • Full-color printed iron on patches — Sublimation printing captures photographic detail, gradients, and complex artwork that stitching can’t replicate. If your design has shading or blended colors, this is the route.
  • Chenille iron on patches — That fluffy, varsity-letter texture. Popular for sports teams, schools, and fashion brands going for a retro aesthetic.

Size

Iron on patches can be made from 1″ all the way up to 12″. The right size depends on where the patch is going, chest patches are typically 3″–4″, back patches run larger, and hat patches stay around 2″–3″ so they sit comfortably on the crown or brim.

Shape

Round, rectangular, shield, custom die-cut, any shape works. If your logo has a specific silhouette, we cut to match it. Custom shapes don’t add to the cost.

Border Style

  • Merrowed border — A looped stitched edge around the patch. Clean, traditional, and the most common choice for embroidered patches.
  • Hot cut — The patch is cut close to the design edge for a tighter, more modern look. Works well for irregular shapes.
  • Laser cut — Precision cutting for very fine edges and detailed outlines.
  • Die cut — The patch shape follows the contours of the design exactly, no standard geometric edge.

Thread & Colors

We match to Pantone/PMS standards. If your brand has specific color codes, send them over and we’ll match as closely as the thread range allows. Special thread options include metallic, glow-in-the-dark, and reflective, useful for safety gear or night-wear applications.

Special Finishes

Iron-on is the default for this page, but if you want to add a second layer of security, you can combine it with a sew-on approach, iron first to tack it in place, then stitch around the edge. Other backing options we offer on the same patch include Velcro, adhesive, and magnetic backs if you ever need to switch things up.

Who Orders Custom Iron On Patches

The appeal of iron on patches is that they work for a wide range of people and purposes, quick application without needing a sewing machine makes them practical across a lot of different industries and use cases.

Sports Teams and Schools

Iron on patches for clothes like jerseys, warm-up jackets, and gym bags give teams a consistent, branded look without complex uniform modifications. Schools use them for spirit wear, letterman jackets, and club gear. Because they apply without sewing, coaches or parents can do it at home.

Businesses and Corporate Brands

Workwear patches on polos, aprons, or staff jackets are a common order. Companies in hospitality, construction, retail, and logistics use iron-on embroidered patches to badge employees quickly and consistently. It’s faster to press a patch than to embroider a logo directly onto each garment, especially for large teams or rotating seasonal staff.

Small Brands and Merch Sellers

Custom iron on patches are popular with independent clothing brands, Etsy sellers, and streetwear labels. They’re easy to package with orders so customers can apply them themselves, and they make great add-on products alongside hats, tees, and hoodies.

Military and Law Enforcement

Iron on embroidered patches are standard on tactical vests, duty bags, and base-layer gear. When combined with a sew-on finish, they’re durable enough for field use. Units and departments typically order in bulk for consistency across the whole team.

Events and Promotions

Conferences, charity runs, music festivals, and trade shows all use iron-on patches as giveaways or promotional merchandise. They’re compact, affordable in volume, and feel more premium than a sticker while being more functional than a flyer.

DIY and Repair

A solid portion of orders are individuals who want to cover a tear, rebrand a jacket, or add something personal to a bag or cap. Iron-on patches are the fastest fix for worn fabric, and a well-placed embroidered patch can make something look intentional rather than damaged.

Why Patch Makers USA

There’s no shortage of patch suppliers online. Here’s what actually separates us:

Veteran-Owned and Operated

Patch Makers USA was built by veterans who understand what quality means on a uniform. That mindset carries into every order, we’re not shipping patches that we wouldn’t put on our own gear.

Free Design, Every Time

You don’t need a designer or a print-ready file. Send us a description, a rough sketch, an existing logo, or an inspiration image. Our design team builds the artwork and sends you a proof. Changes are free until it’s right.

No Minimum — Order What You Need

Whether you need 10 patches for a small club or 5,000 for a uniform rollout, we handle both. There’s no minimum order quantity on iron on patches, which makes us a practical option for test runs before committing to a larger batch.

Hook and Loop Both Handled

We supply hook backing as standard on every velcro patch order. If you need matching loop tape, for gear that doesn’t already have a loop field, we include it. You get a complete, functional attachment system without having to source the other side separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

There’s no minimum. You can order as few as one patch. Pricing per patch goes down as quantity goes up, so bulk orders are more cost-effective, but we don’t require a minimum to get started.

Most orders ship within 7–10 business days from proof approval. If you need them faster, ask us about rush production, 5-day and 7-day options are available for qualifying orders.

Cost depends on patch size, style, and quantity. Embroidered patches start lower, printed and chenille styles vary. Contact us for a quote or use the form on this page, we respond quickly with a price and a proof.

Yes. Iron on patches holds well through regular washing. For best results, turn the garment inside out, use cold water, a gentle cycle, and skip the dryer or use low heat. If you want the patch to last through heavy use, workwear, sports uniforms, tactical gear, adding a few stitches around the edge is a smart move.

Cotton, denim, canvas, and polyester blends all bond well with iron-on adhesive. The backing doesn’t work as well on nylon, heavily textured surfaces, waterproof fabrics, or anything with significant stretch like spandex. For those materials, sewing or Velcro backing is the better call.

Any format works, PNG, JPG, PDF, AI, EPS, even a photo of a hand-drawn sketch. Our design team handles the conversion to production-ready files. You don’t need to send us print-ready artwork.

They can be loosened by reapplying heat, but the adhesive will leave residue on the fabric and the patch may be damaged in the process. They’re designed for long-term wear, not for frequent removal. If you need something removable, Velcro-backed patches are the right option.

Bulk iron on patches are one of our most common order types. Volume pricing kicks in as quantities increase, and we have experience running large orders for uniform programs, event merchandise, and promotional campaigns. Get in touch with your quantity and we’ll put together a quote.
